The next time you are eating your favorite foods, take a look at it's cholesterol content. Previously, we did not have to worry about the things called 'cholesterol', but now it is becoming a major health concern. What is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a fatty, waxy lipid needed for all essential functions in the body. Each and every cell has a membrane that is made up of cholesterol. Cholesterol provides and insulation to all of our nerve fibers. Proper nerve signals are not possible without it. Hormones also rely on cholesterol structures to help regulate all the processes in our body as well. So why is it so bad?

Although cholesterol is critical for our bodily functions, it still must be controlled or serious health problems can occur.
How Do You Find Out Your Cholesterol Level?
Consult your physician so they may conduct a test to determine your cholesterol levels. Specifically, you must find out the lipoprotein concentrations.
Lipoproteins are molecules responsible for carrying cholesterol throughout the body in the bloodstream. They control how much cholesterol is circulating in your body. There are two types of lipoproteins:
1. High Density Lipoproteins or HDL
and
2. Low Density Lipoproteins or LDL
Our LDL levels is the one that we need to be watching when concerned about illness and disease. When our LDL levels increase too much, it can build up and cause blockages in the arteries. We often call low density lipoprotein the 'bad' cholesterol. On the other hand High density lipoprotein is referred to as the 'good' cholesterol because it returns cholesterol from the blood to the liver.
We need to have the correction ratio of HDL and LDL in our bodies. Each person is different, so it is advised to speak with your doctor to get your correct cholesterol level. Factors such as age, weight, gender, genetics, diet, blood pressure, and lifestyle are all important when cholesterol is concerned. The higher the cholesterol levels, the greater the risk of heart disease, stroke, or heart attack.
Eating healthy foods, regular exercise, and other lifestyle improvements will help to lower cholesterol in the body. Quitting smoking is another effective method. However, if these changes do not lower your cholesterol, seeking prescription medication from your doctor is recommended.
